[ jogos de rua ] was one of the winning projects of the programme BIP/ZIP 2012 launched by Lisbon’s City Hall (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa). It consisted of a collective design and making of 8 themed mobile playground units that would appropriate the empty or run-down spaces of PRODAC, a social housing neighbourhood at the east edge of Lisbon.

[a linha] was one of the winning projects of the programme BIP/ZIP 2012 launched by Lisbon’s City Hall (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa). It consisted of 4 routes through Alfama, one of the historical neighbourhoods in Lisbon with an aging population and a run-down building stock. The routes marked 25 neglected spaces in the neighbourhood which then adopted the colours of the 4 lines - green, red , blue & yellow - depending on the programme that would inhabit them (green spaces, cultural events, business related spaces and play and sports). Those should allow local residents and visitors to navigate through Alfama in a more pro-active way engaging with those (formerly) run-down spaces.

Various forms of information communication technology are increasingly integrated in our public environments. At the same time, challenges arise to render such technologies locally relevant and meaningful. While electronic public displays can be found in various urban environments, still much is unknown in regards to their social and societal integration within the fabric of the city or a neighbourhood.

The urban design principles that shaped Western Europe's open society had a huge impact on the twentieth century. In a variety of constellations they can be found in each country, under every political system, and in every urban design that was fashionable in its day. But there is no other country where these principles have been adopted and perversely transformed as in South Africa.

In his editorial to Volume 40: Architecture of Peace Reloaded, Arjen Oosterman looks at re-building efforts in post-conflict societies and questions how architectural intelligence can be applied in such entangled scenarios.

AnG 3 – Soko Klima, Stadt gestalten mit Plan. Parallel to developing the Campus Efeuweg project, the Chair for Urban Design and Urbanization teamed up with kubus TU Berlin, UfU e.V. Berlin and ifeu Heidelberg. Funded by the Ministry of Environment, the project Soko Klima developed a toolbox to teach climate conscious urban development and participation for first and second grade education. How can design impact the way we life in cities and respectfully use our resources? How can kids and teenagers engage in the design and the politics of the urban? The toolbox was developed on the basis of the workshops held and experiences gained during the Akademie’s Campus Efeuweg project.
The first image shows part of the material of the toolbox. The second image is a snapshot of the design workshop of the Walt-Disney school and Liebig school common schoolyard.

AnG 2 – Campus Efeuweg. The Akademie’s first introduction into Gropiusstadt was a cooperative design project with an educational association - schools, youth and sport facilities along the Efeuweg. In order to facilitate an educational reform that encompasses a stronger cooperation between the institutions and the requirements of whole-day schooling, they aimed at developing a common campus for the students and the neighborhood.
